On December 12, 2008, Mr. Liu Shaoyong was nominated by the CPC Organization Department to take over the position of General Manager of China Eastern Airlines Group and the board chairman of the China Eastern Airlines.

Influenced by the global financial crisis, the whole civil aviation industry of China suffered loss in 2008. China’s government has put a lot of money in saving the state-owned airlines companies.

Liu Shaoyong was born in November 1958. He graduated from the Civil Aviation Flight University of China and became a first-class pilot. After the graduation, he joined the Chinese aviation industry in 1978. He has served as President of China Eastern Airlines Company Limited from 2000 to 2002; Vice-Minister of the Civil Aviation Administration of China from 2002 to August 2004 and has been President of China Southern Air Holding Company since August 2004.

Liu Shaoyong had great achievements when he was the president of China Southern Airlines. Under his leadership, China Southern Airlines joined in SkyTeam Alliance- an international aviation organization. This was the first China’s aviation enterprise joining in an international organization. In 2007, China Southern Airlines carried the 56.74 million passengers and its net profit in 2007 was 1.85 billion yuan (USD 271.2 million), the best performance ever of China Southern Airlines. Liu Shaoyong’s strong management ability was appreciated by the CPC Organization Department, which appointed him the leader of China Eastern Airlines.
