Enjoy MONET with Reasonable Layout

The fiber-optical-based broadband is very close. People wonder how to make a reasonable layout of these optical fiber cables so that they can enjoy the MONET.

Since China Telecom Shanghai has launched the construction of “Metro Optic Network” (MONET) and the plan of increasing bandwidth for “Smarter City”, the fiber-optical-based broadband is close at hand and begins to show its charm. How to make a reasonable layout of those optical fiber cables to make people enjoy the MONET is an issue many people pay attention to.

On April 23 and 24, Shanghai Spring Household Improvement & Decoration Expo was held in the Shanghai Exhibition Center. China Telecom Shanghai, together with the home decoration giants, displayed different plans of logical optical fiber cable layout at home, as well as the convenience MONET will bring for the users.

Numerous visitors stayed in front of the booth of China Telecom Shanghai, bombarding the workers there with the questions about MONET. China Telecom Shanghai arranged two speeches, in which the experts of cable layout made introductions and answered questions on the spot to make public know about the layout at home.

Diversified Solutions

The workers of China Telecom Shanghai said to the journalist that each house now has a family information box where the inlet lines are sorted. “We unite with Jutong Decoration and the other decoration companies to persuade the users to reserve the lines for fiber optical cables and IPTV during their home decorations. It removes them of any further changes to the cable layout at their homes if the FTTH program is extended to their communities.

But it will not be a big problem if no fiber optical cables are reserved before the decoration. It is because the fiber optical cables are very thin and could be fit in the colorful wiring channels. The workers of China Telecom Shanghai will install the cables according to the requirements of customers. Users having closed conduits can make the fiber optical cables go through these closed conduits.

For example, people can use the conduits of the telephone lines. The workers of China Telecom Shanghai will ask the users whether they can move the telephone line conduits connecting the weak-current box and Family Information Box. If so, the fiber optical cables can go through these conduits. Otherwise, a new closed conduit can be installed for the fiber optical cables.

We noticed that China Telecom Shanghai also printed some manuals with both pictures and words, indicating the requirements of cable layout, relevant size and detailed diagraphs.

Experience excellence on the spot

In order to experience the convenience brought the MONET to the ordinary households. We visited some users who have already used the MONET.

Mr. Chen in Wanbo Garden said that he had MONET connected to his home in April. It only took 4-5 days from application to the completion. The workers of China Telecom Shanghai installed a special closed conduit through which the fiber optical cables go to his home. The hub is installed in the Family Information Box, from which a cable spreads out and connects the wireless Router in the house. Therefore, he can enjoy wireless network through his three computers at home.

The bandwidth at Mr. Chen’s home was originally 2Mb. After the installation of MONET, the bandwidth increased to 10Mb. An additional 10Mb broadband is used for HD IPTV. According to Mr. Chen, now the Internet speed cannot be affected even if the three computers are downloading things at the same time. Watching IPTV and surfing on Internet with computer no longer harm each other. His 3-year daughter like watching cartoons and she can find abundant resources in the program pool of IPTV. “The service is better but the price remains unchanged. I am very satisfied.” It is known that about 70 residents in Mr. Chen’s community have already used MONET.

Ms. Lin lives in an old lane in Changshu Road, which was built in 1920s. The MONET spreads to her house in April as well, increasing the bandwidth at her home from 4Mb to 10Mb. At home she used to surf on Internet, play online games and watch IPTV. The fiber-optical-based broadband allows her to enjoy increasing Internet speed and releases her from the delay in the World of Warcraft.

Actually, apart from the common Internet and HD IPTV, the users of MONET can also enjoy the cloud storage, mTouch, MegaEye, etc. brought by China Telecom Shanghai.

One million users in one year

From the 2011 Shanghai Telecommunication Development Annual Conference on May 18, we know that there are 600 thousand homes having fiber optical cables. As the most important basic facility for the project of “Smarter City”, MONET is giving powerful promotion to the development of this project.

China Telecom Shanghai worked out the blueprint of “Smarter City” in 2009 and launched the “MONET” construction at the same time. On the first day of 2011 the company launched the program of increasing the bandwidth, including FTTH, free increase of Internet speed, public hotspots, free WiFi, family storage, free 100Gb storage space and 100Mb broadband to home with minimum 20Mb. This program enables the consumers to enjoy more convenient and less costly communication services, improves Shanghai’s information technology level and accelerates the construction of “Smarter City”.

It is known that China Telecom Shanghai plans to build a network of MONET that can cover 3.4 million users and recruit 1 million users of MONET this year. The average bandwidth for the users can reach 8Mb. By the end of the 12th Five-year Plan (2015), China Telecom Shanghai will make MONET cover 9 million users, i.e., every corner of the downtown of Shanghai. More than 4.5 million users will be recruited by then with the average bandwidth of 50Mb. The new broadband featuring “openness, high speed, ubiquity and intelligence” will be the base for Shanghai’s plan of being a “Smarter City”. The fiber-optical-based “MONET” is spreading in Shanghai.
