Yu Weiguo: Took the Post of Party Secretary of Xiamen, Fujian

Yu Weiguo, former Standing Member of Fujian Provincial Committee of the CPC and the Director of Fujian Provincial Department of Organization, was appointed the Party Secretary of Xiamen on June 10. This post was previously taken by He Lifeng, who now is the Deputy Party Secretary of Tianjin.

Xiamen is the leading city in the Economic Zone on the Western Coast of the Taiwan Straits. Great importance is usually attached to the appointments of the leaders of this city by the central government. Yu Weiguo, 45, graduated from the Chinese Major of People’s University of China. He was one of the few government officials who have the experience of working in the municipal, provincial and central governments.

Yu once worked in the central government for more than 10 years. From 1991 to 1995, he worked in the General Office of the Secretary of the State Council and the Secretary to Ding Guangen, current Director of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee. In August 1995, he was appointed as the Assistant Mayor of Xiamen and then the Acting Mayor. In 1999 he was promoted to the Standing Member of Xiamen Municipal Committee of the CPC. After that he took various posts in Xiamen. In 2006 he became the Standing Member of Fujian Provincial Committee of the CPC.

Along with Xiamen, another three cities of FujianFuzhou, Quanzhou and Zhangzhou – had official changes. The economic aggregate of these four cities takes nearly one half of the total one of Fujian province. The experts pointed out that Xiamen must play a more important role in the development of the Economic Zone on the Western Coast of the Taiwan Straits, which has just been listed as the key place of national development. The central government required that the GPD per capital level should catch up with the eastern region in 2012. The appointment of Yu Weiguo is undoubtedly a measure of guaranteeing the strong leadership.
