Zeng Jinchun, 61, former secretary of the CPC Chenzhou Municipal Commission for Discipline Inspection, was sentenced to death for taking 31.52 million Yuan (USD 4.50 million) in bribes from 1997 to September 2006.

He took the illegal money in exchange for meting out promotions, contracts, mining permits. His wife, son and daughter were all involved in the bribery by cooperating with him. They had been under investigation by November 24.

In addition, Zeng, who also served as vice secretary of the CPC Chenzhou Municipal Committee, had another 9.53 million Yuan (USD 1.36 million) that he could not account for.

Zeng used to think that he could not fall because of corruption. In 2006, the Hunan Provincial Commission for Discipline Inspection sent people to Chenzhou to make investigations on him for three times. However, the results were all that Zeng was a qualified official without corruption problems. Zeng made most of his power of his position: he did numerous favors to the businessmen who gave bribery to him. For the ones against him, he misused laws and administration power. During 2001 to 2002, he illegally detained more than 30 cadres and ordinary civilians.
